Nevis Island!
On our first trip to Nevis, we found it to be (in our opinion) the most beautiful island in the Caribbean. We were taken back to what we imagined the islands were like before commercial development.
The charm and tranquility take you back to a time when things were simpler, when life was more peaceful, when stress was just a word, not a way of life. At the same time, we found Nevis is far from a backward island, having one of the highest literacy rates in the world. They have just chosen to develop Nevis tourism with taste.
There were many choices for accommodations. Nevis offers a full range of hotels and inns, guest houses, and rental villas and apartments.
We chose to stay at Nisbett Plantation – a casually elegant Nevis resort, which has been recognized as one of the best small luxury hotels in the Caribbean by major travel magazines. The plantation has a beautifully-restored 1778 Great House and 36 charming cottages spread among 30 acres of lush tropical foliage. Nevis has to have the friendliest people on the planet. And the Nisbet Plantation hired the best and most customer service oriented among them. The food was fantastic. We had the breakfast/dinner plan and ate lunch elsewhere about half of the time. It was surreal how the staff knew our name almost immediately. They then find out where you like to sit, what you like to drink, etc. We have never been catered to on such a level.
Nisbett has three dining venues.
Coconuts
Overlooking the pool and the beach, this is a popular meeting place for breakfast. Coconuts is also the scene for their popular weekly evening poolside barbecue.
Sea Breeze Beach Bar
The Beach Bar, with its ideal tropical setting, serves as the epicenter of beach activities throughout the day till 6pm.
The Great House
Known for its historic 18th-century charm and classic décor is one of a kind. It has been beautifully-restored and provides an enchanting backdrop for an intimate meal of some of Nevis' finest cuisine.
The beach at Nisbett is like most Caribbean beaches, it is sandy with rocky areas. You can walk two minutes to an all sand area. You can snorkel and see fish (barracuda, permit, etc.) right off the beach.
There are several things to do while on Nevis from hiking nature trails, horseback riding, biking, golf, boating, snorkeling and other beach activities.
Nevis Landmarks
The Botanical Gardens of Nevis
The Botanical Gardens were created on Nevis several years ago, to create something beautiful on the island and to preserve flora from throughout the world. They chose a lovely spot in Montpelier Estate area, with views of Nevis Peak in the distance. The gardens, filled with sculpture, fountains, and a replica of a Great House, has many garden areas to visit: roses and vines, cacti, fruit trees, orchids. The most outstanding part is the tropical rain forest conservatory, built to emulate the conservatory at Kew Gardens in England. It houses tropical plants and huge Mayan-type sculptures.
Horatio Nelson Museum
As its names implies, this museum displays artifacts and memorabilia of the life and times of British Naval Admiral, Lord Horatio Nelson, who visited Nevis in the late 18th century.
Nevisian Heritage Village
The Nevisian Heritage Village administered by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, largely depicts the evolution of Nevisian social history through housing. The houses, dating from the Carib Indian era, are replicas and are furnished with antiques and relics of their relevant periods.

Plantation Inns
Nevis has five beautifully-restored sugar plantations that are now elegant inns. Each has its own personality and style, and amenities fitting a relaxing stay in peaceful surroundings. The history of these inns is fascinating and it's worth a visit to each of them while on the island, to enjoy a lunch or dinner in a variety of surroundings.
Charlestown
Walk up and down the streets of this delightful town and see one of the best remaining examples of the colonial era in the Caribbean.
Museum of Nevis History
What stood out the most for us was the friendliness of the people. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful, ready to make new friends and welcome back regular visitors. The genuine charm and hospitality radiate into the unspoken, "Welcome," "Be my guest," and "Do come again."
Nevis is special, a place that will seduce you, and tug at your heart strings after you leave.
